Key Considerations
Sizing
We have found that an adult requires about 36 square feet of soil and a child 16 to produce the desired amount of food in a season. A family of four would need roughly 100 sq feet of planting space. For reference that is equivalent to a 15’ x 22’ Signature Style (4 of our 8’ x 3’ raised beds) or a 10’ x 16’ Premier Style.
Pest Control
Pest control is extremely important for your garden and we go well above the options you will find elsewhere. Animals, especially rabbits and woodchucks, will dig deeper and squeeze tighter than you would imagine so we place wire mesh 12” below the exterior fence and fence the structure in by ½” galvanized steel, not square 1” or chicken wire. To protect against deer we either place raised beds two feet from the fence or raise the fence above where they can browse.
Irrigation
We highly recommend incorporating an automated drip irrigation system. Our initial site visit will determine in what form and how accessible that system may be. We will install the system or can coordinate with your current lawn irrigation system provider.
Pathways
It is recommended that weed controls are placed in the garden pathways by use of landscape fabric and pea gravel. These are not requirements of a successful home garden but after a month or so of no lawn maintenance the pathways become overgrown, stamped down and unattractive.
Customizable Features
Wood Type
Standard will be pine construction. Cedar is a beautiful, naturally rot-resistant wood to also consider.
Gravel Pathways
We recommend pea gravel placed over landscape fabric for weed control and a more beautiful garden. There are a couple types of pea gravel we can discuss.
Bed Height
While we can build any bed height for those with physical limitations, our standard depth is 8” and also suggest increasing to 12”.
Fence Height
An important decision for pest control and aesthetics. A higher fence may be necessary if there are abutting trees or wind is a problem. A higher fence may also blend better within the landscaping.
External Planters
Any gardens may be built with outside planters along the perimeter for aesthetically pleasing and pest deterring plants, such as flowers, garlic and onions.
