FAQ

How do I determine the correct garden size for my property?

Your garden should blend with your existing landscaping and provide the type and amounts of fruits and vegetables that you desire. We will determine the appropriate size based on what works best within your property’s exposure to the sun, access to water, and slope.  Remember everything is customizable at Home Harvest.

How do I know where the garden should go?

Ideally your garden would receive around 8 hours of sunlight a day with at least five hours preferred. We will use our solar equipment to find those areas that work on your property.  Access to irrigation is also important.  Open your mind to where a home garden may fit, it does not have to be relegated to the backyard.

What are some options for watering my garden?

We highly recommend using an automated drip irrigation system. We will place two pipes running down each planting bed that are hooked up with an outside water source and attached to a timer.  If you are an extremely disciplined individual you can water the beds directly however be careful to not water the leaves.

Can I use an existing garden or planter?

We will be happy to incorporate any existing garden infrastructure you have.  We may have to repurpose or modify it but will be happy to discuss the options.

Can I purchase individual planters?

We have individual pine and cedar planters available for purchase for those of us who don’t have a great yard for a garden but have a patio or other spot in the sun for a planter.

Can I have a garden that works for my physical limitations?

We can build garden beds as high as needed for those with difficulty bending over, garden beds with wide railings to allow for frequent breaks, and gardens with wide pathways and higher beds for easy wheelchair access.

Why do I need raised garden beds?

You do not need raised garden beds to have successful plantings. We recommend using them because your soil will warm up quicker in the spring, they have great drainage, they prevent soil compaction, and you can plant an array of vegetables in a small high producing area.

Why should my beds have a raised support structure or a trellis?

Many plants need support as they grow. Usually home gardeners will use stakes, cones or cages to keep plants from bending over.  We find the use of each is more difficult and less beneficial than using a trellis type raised structure where you can tie up your plants such as tomatoes.  We will also incorporate full string or wood trellises if you desire to grow peas.

What can I expect after my garden is built?

While we are working on your garden construction we will be planning your seasonal crops for immediate planting after completion. If desired we will share planting and maintenance tips for the plants you choose and leave the rest up to you.  Otherwise we will do all the purchasing and implementation of soil, seed and transplants.  Please see our maintenance program for more information.
